Do you know GM RAM, Rashid Zyatdinov’s book from 2001? It’s one of the most extraordinary chess books ever published.
The core of the book is nearly 300 positions printed without any verbal explanation. Or analysis. Or even a label of which side is to move.
At the end of GM RAM there’s a collection of games. Unannotated. Just the bare game scores.
That’s it. That’s the entire book. As an author, I can never make my mind up whether Zyatdinov is a genius or the laziest mofo who ever lived. Or both.
I’ll come back to the chess positions at some later date. The games you’re supposed to memorise. Rote learning a few dozen chess games is an interesting idea, and, for what it’s worth, my feeling is that it’s a good one.
So I thought I’d start at The Abysmal Depths of Chess RAM collection. Games to memorise that would help tackle a position from Beat the Masters. I’ll begin with Tal - Larsen (10), Candidates’ Match 1965 as mentioned by Howell in BTM6.

1 Nd5+ Rivas - Luce, Berga 1987
The game continued:-
ReplyDelete18 Nd5+ exd5, 19 exd6+ Kxd6, 20 Qxe8 Qxd3, 21 cxd5 and now 21 ... Qg6 (? - Lamford) 22 Re6+! Qe6, 23 dxe6 fxe6, 24 Rd1+ 1-0
although according to Lamford after cxd5 White has a winning attack anyway.
So Jack’s analysis (see yesterday's comments box) was pretty much on the money.
I’ll come back to the Fidelity Mach 2’s choice of Bh7 in some future post.
