The Toaster and Kettle Chess Academy VIII
Squeezing in some chess where I can.
This week I’m delving further into automating the TAKCA process. Today’s subject being my notebook: why it is what it is and how that’s useful.
The way Pandolfini’s Endgame Manual is laid out, I could just work directly from the book each morning. I don’t do it that way, though. Partly because there’s a good chance I’d accidentally see the diagram of the position I’m trying to visualise blindfold, but mostly because the book itself would be too unwieldy.
To make a habit a stick, you need to make it as small and as easy as possible. If I used a chess book the chances are I’d have to go looking for it each morning. That’s very much what I don’t want to do. Too much of a chance that I’d not remember where I’d left it, too much of an opportunity to tell myself that I didn’t have time to track it down and that I’d skip the chess this morning.
So I use a note book. A small one. It’s A6 in size. It’s small enough that it fits in my back pocket so I can and do carry it around all day. Handy for those impromptu and unplanned tea brewing opportunities.
More importantly I can leave it on my bedside table every night so when I wake up I know exactly where it’s going to be.
No hunting. No searching. I just pick it up as I’m falling out of bed on my way to the kitchen.
And once again, automation increases likelihood of getting the work done.
