The Toaster and Kettle Chess Academy IV

Squeezing in some chess where I can.

I began thinking about habits thanks to some tweets by Neal Bruce. Specifically, he mentioned Tiny Habits: the small changes that change everything, by BJ Fogg.

I got the book although, as it turned out, I didn’t finish it. I found the author, or at least his writing style, a bit annoying. Still, I read enough to pick up the gist:-

1.

When trying to change things around habits are better than sporadic behaviours because by definition you do them regularly and that helps build momentum.

2.

Small habits are better than huge endeavours. Small means it takes less time and effort, which means you’ll actually do it. 

3.

Later when the habit is established you can expand it by increasing the difficulty, but the key thing is to start small. And tiny is best of all.

A bit of chess whilst waiting for the toaster seemed to fit the bill very well indeed.
