The Toaster and Kettle Chess Academy III
Squeezing in some chess where I can.
At some point last year - it would have been late in the summer or more likely in the autumn - I began thinking about when and where I could squeeze a bit more chess into my day.
I work shifts. Some weekends, some nights, some times I work normal business hours. As often as not I’ll either be staring at 7am or working late afternoon deep into the evening.
Anyway, this one time I was waiting for my breakfast bagel to toast and idly got to wondering if there was somewhere in my non-chess life I could fit in a bit of chess. Not for long. Just for a few minutes, but something I could do each day.
I couldn’t think of anything.
The next day as I was making my breakfast I found myself thinking about this subject again. And once more I came up blank.
It was the third day, maybe even later, that the penny finally dropped. When I think about it now it's slightly disconcerting how long it took to see what was right in front of my face. This was the time. I had a few minutes every day waiting for the toaster. Why not use it? Soon after I added those minutes when I was waiting for the kettle to boil for my tea. (I’m English. They add up.)
And that’s how TAKCA began.
As to why I was thinking about how I could find a little more time to play chess … well the credit for that belongs to Neal Bruce.
More about that next week.
