SC Week 7/1: Fischer - Gheorghiu, Buenos Aires 1970 (Space)
"The real test of our insight into the mechanics of an advantage in space comes when confronted by a completely sound (structurally), solid but cramped position."
Michael Stean
Notes and Observations
Re1-e3-g3 Reminiscent of Hecht - Forintos (Weak Pawns/3). Fischer’s not interested in the open file per se (entry points).
Black’s doubled isolated pawns are very much what Stean wants to avoid and not at all the good kind (Weak pawns/7).
Capacity is the key concept for this game and for the whole chapter. If avoiding exchanges is underlying principle of White’s play and Black wants to trade pieces why not 15 … Ne7 to be able to play … Bf5?
Looking over the game again this morning I find 27 Re3 rather striking. Fischer is prepared to trade Black's rook confident that he can win the minor piece ending due to Black's split pawns and bad bishop. In playing this was he successfully bullies Black off the open file.
