Chess in the 80s 13: International News (09/1988)

Every month CHESS had a page dedicated to International (i.e. non-British) chess news. Here we have a great example leading with Max Dlugy winning the World Open, which must have had the biggest prize of any Swiss tournament at the time.

Note the fourth item about Zsusa (as she was known then) Polgar playing on top board of the "ladies" team for Hungary at the next Olympiad. Seems a bit quaint now. Or it would do in any field other than British chess. Here, there was quite a lot of chat about the 'Ladies' becoming the women’s British Championship not all that long ago.

And finally, just in case you were thinking this all looks a bit normal, we have Yusupov playing top board for the Red Army.
